Executive Function and Snow RemovalNone of my neighbors are likely to answer a personal question like, "What is the status of your executive functioning?" But they leave clues all over their property when we get as much snow as we've gotten this winter. If you live in snow country look at the driveways and sidewalks of your neighbors. Notice the big piles of shoveled snow lining the walks and driveway aprons like privacy fences. Can you tell who wasn't thinking past the shovel of snow they were about to throw?
If you throw the first snowfall's snow right next to the driveway, then the next snowfall has to be thrown up on top, and the one after that has to be thrown up and up to get on top, and the next one up and up and up, etc.
We usually have long periods of the winter when we don't get any appreciable melt so soon people are trying to throw the snow over the pile they made earlier in the winter or lift the shovel full over their heads to place it on top of the pile.
The effort to throw shovels full of snow up is pretty significant compared to throwing the first snow fall five or six feet away from the walk or drive. If we have a long snowy spell without melting then you've made a substantial area that you can fill with snow before you wall yourself in.
As I watched most of my neighbors struggling after the last snow I wondered about adding snow shoveling coaching to my career specialties.
